SASO - Energy efficiency & labeling requirements for lighting products

Energy efficiency and labeling requirements for lighting products--based on interpretations under SASO

First of all, we need to explain the scope of use of lighting products. Generally, photo lamps are divided into directional lights and non-directional lights.

(1) Directional lights: Lights with more than 80% of the luminous flux within a 120° cone solid angle are directional lights. ;

(2) Non-directional lights: Lights with less than 80% of the luminous flux within a 120° cone solid angle are directional lights.

Exempted products: There is no need to calculate energy efficiency levels and meet performance requirements to apply for energy efficiency labels. You only need to apply for an exemption certificate on the system in accordance with the exemption terms. Just display the following information on the lamp print and packaging: brand, model, power, voltage, luminous flux, color temperature, CRI, origin and use, etc.

The energy efficiency exempted products include: (1) traffic lights; infrared lamps for heating; (2) lamps for non-main lighting, such as: swimming lights, anti-virus lamps, disinfection lamps, emergency lighting, explosion-proof lamps, medical lamps, Battery-powered lamps, etc. (3) Exemptions due to technical reasons, including high-intensity gas discharge lamps, single-ended upper fluorescent lamps, and situations where X.Y is not within the definition of white light (non-white light), such as RGB; (4) Lamps for engineering purposes. Such lamps may not be placed on the market.

We will talk about energy efficiency in five parts:

Part 1: Energy efficiency grade, which is usually divided into A, B, C, D, E, F, G. It is mainly related to power and luminous flux. The displayed results are as follows. In Saudi Arabia's energy efficiency grades, LED products have only four grades, A, B, C, and D.

SASO2870 covers light sources with luminous flux ranging from 60 to 12000lm, including incandescent lamps, halogen lamps, energy-saving lamps, and LED lamps.

SASO2902, the scope includes lamps (non-street lights and tunnel lights), light sources >12000LM, lamp tubes, etc.

SASO2927, range of street lights and tunnel lights, metal halide lamps and high pressure discharge lamps.

The second one is SASO2927, which is for conventional street lights (solar energy 2902 exemption)

In terms of energy efficiency, the overall lighting efficiency of the lamp is greater than 120LM/W, and the lamp bead efficiency is 85%.

Because Saudi Arabia is located in the tropical desert region of the Middle East, many of his designs take local environmental factors into consideration.

1. The lamp should be designed to function normally in a temperature and humidity environment where the sun is exposed, sand and dust attack the lamp (IP66 or above)

2. LED chips and lamps are higher than LM70 at 50,000 hours (the lumen maintenance rate is greater than 70%. According to the standard definition, life is the length of time when 70% light decay is achieved, so the life of the entire lamp is at least 50,000H).

3. Color rendering (Ra) should be ≥70

4. Suppliers should provide ISTMT test results regarding the temperature rise of each component of the lamp (LED chip, lens, driver, SPD-surge protector) at an ambient temperature of 50°.

Constant voltage drivers are not allowed. The driver must be Dali (preferred) or 0-10V dimmable (can be 1-10V dimmable).

The fixture must contain a base for a 7-pin NEMA capped receptacle for future smart city use. (Note: If you already have a width sensor, you don’t need to add it. IP66 or above is required)

The control device (driver) needs to be able to work at 60Hz, 230V voltage. (The working voltage on the driver CB must be within this range or higher than this range)

If the temperature exceeds the allowable limit, the drive can gradually reduce its luminous intensity until the temperature returns to normal, but is not allowed to shut down completely.

The power factor of both the driver and the entire lamp should be ≥0.9
